Well hello spring. Here is my run down on some of this season’s key trends.
The Slip dress: Inner wear becomes outer wear. The sort of full length slip we would have worn years ago under a dress, has this season become the dress. I think this look will take some careful navigation; flimsy fabrics are very unforgiving worn as a standalone piece.
However, it is an excellent whimsical foundation piece to style and to add other light weight layers to. For this reason, the slip dress is a valuable wardrobe piece that can earn its keep for many years to come. With that in mind you are allowed to buy more than one, provided they are quality versions.
The shirt dress: expect to see this in a myriad of fabrics and patterns. I like it because you can add some structure in the form of a belt to what otherwise would be a very shapeless look. Remember if you don’t like the belt a shirt dress comes with, jettison it and replace it with a good quality leather alternative.
Mules and Block Heels: I haven’t seen mules in this quantity or variation for…. let me think…..ever! Also expect to see block heels this season. If you have a heavier leg, this look can work beautifully. If you have very delicate, thin legs, always check the shoe on your foot in the mirror before purchasing. If it resembles a breeze block, back away and find a toned down version of this heel.
Bare shoulders: Shoulders are the new erogenous zone. Dresses and tops with ‘bare shoulder’ designs will be in plentiful supply. The dilemma of course is the dreaded strapless bra, most of which flatten you out and squash you down. The one that does work a treat, even if you are generous in that department, is the Ultimate Strapless Bra by Wonderbra (up to a G cup) available at Edgars. It sits lower than a regular bra, at first you won’t believe it will hold you in place. Trust me on this, put your blouse on and see it work its magic.
Statement earrings: Trade in the statement necklace for earrings. This trend works hand in hand with the bare shoulder look.
