Beauty with No Cruelty

Beauty without cruelty

I was appalled to learn recently that Estee Lauder and M.A.C cosmetics have started animal testing again (M.A.C outsources the testing- same thing in my book). An estimated 50 000 animals die every year for cosmetic testing.

This is a massive backward step. The pressure was ramped up in the eighties from groups such as PETA (People for the ethical treatment of animals) to stop this cruel and unnecessary practice and because public opinion was swayed; with the help of high profile celebrities, many of the cosmetic houses complied. It would seem the pressure is off and greed has crept in again.

When you are about your Christmas shopping I would encourage you to buy consciously, select cruelty free and ethically sourced cosmetic and body products.

If you want more motivation not to be a ‘cruel’ consumer just search for ‘images animal cosmetic testing’, they are truly horrific. Dogs force fed shampoo is just one practice with far worse fates for many animals. With this knowledge only the heartless would not be moved in to action, in which case there is not a single product on this planet that can beautify that kind of ugliness.

According to One Green Planet, the companies I mentioned are not alone; other companies that test are Olay, Avon, Garnier and Neutrogena.

I unwittingly have and probably still do buy items that abuse animals, however when I know better, I do better and adjust my buying habits.  I would encourage you to do the same.

Beauty without cruelty What can we do? Don’t buy anything from a company you know conducts animal testing, in case you didn’t get it: Estee Lauder, M.A.C, Olay, Avon, Garnier and Neutrogena. Furthermore wherever possible let’s buy ‘honest humane products’ that are not only kind to animals but to ourselves as well. A great local resource for ethical, organic and cruelty free products is found at

We think we don’t have power, WE DO! We have the power these companies care about most and that is purchasing power. Choose where to put your hard earned cash. Together let’s stop supporting companies that don’t support best practice and start supporting those that do.
